The annual Cost of a Date study from premium dating site EliteSingles has been released for 2019. This year, London is the only UK city where date night costs top £100 – confirming it as the 2nd most expensive capital city in the world for dating.
- At £117, London is the UK’s most expensive city for a date night; no other UK city tops £100
- Belfast is the least expensive UK city on the list, with a date night £48 cheaper than London
- Oslo, Norway is the most expensive capital city in the world for dating, London is #2
- An average UK date night costs £89; global average is £70
EliteSingles defined a date night as one including dinner for two, a bottle of wine, two cinema tickets, and a 5-mile taxi ride. The dating site then looked at the average costs of these items in 15 major UK cities and in 30 capital cities around the world.
In 2019, an average date night in the UK is £89. The most expensive date night is in London, where a romantic evening will set you back an average of £117 – £28 more than the average and the only city in the UK to top £100.
At the other end of the scale is Belfast. A romantic night in Northern Ireland’s capital costs just £69 – £20 below average and £48 less than the same date in London.

Figures are rounded: a date in Brighton is £0.06 more than one in Edinburgh, a Birmingham date night is £0.23 more than Cardiff, and Sunderland is £0.12 more than Leeds.
EliteSingles also looked at the cost of the same date (in GBP) in 30 capital cities around the world. An average global date night costs £70 – £19 less than the US average, and a similar price to a date night in Belfast.
A date night in Oslo, Norway is the world’s most expensive: at £131, it puts even London’s costs into perspective. London comes in at #2, while Washington DC, USA takes third at £111 – beating Tokyo, Japan to the third-place finish by just 40p!
The cheapest capital city for dating is Ankara, Turkey. A date in the city costs just £30 – less than the price Brits typically pay for dinner alone.
