Top 10: What not to eat on a first date

First dates are nerve-racking enough without you having to worry about a food-related incident. The fear of spilling tomato sauce all over your white outfit or having spinach stuck in your teeth while you tell your date about your childhood will not help you maintain an air of first date serenity.

First dates are all about getting to know each other so people tend to pay close attention to habits and manners. Don’t be caught in a sticky situation! EliteSingles’ international etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore has compiled a list of 10 foods to avoid to ensure your date runs as smoothly as possible. Pay attention folks, this advice could secure you a second date.

  • 1. Anything with red sauce

Yes, it can be difficult to avoid a red sauce - particularly when a lot of toppings are tomato based - but do yourself a favor and go for a creamy or olive oil based sauce instead. Red sauce splashes and sits poignantly around your mouth – not a strong look for a first date. Steer clear of splattered clothes and your chances of a second date will instantly increase.

  • 2. Lobster

While ordering lobster may exude elegance, in reality it’s actually likely to be a massive mess. Eating lobster is challenging to say the least - never mind while you’re trying to impress a date. Essentially, it involves real strength and skill to break the lobster properly and then serious expertise to identify which parts are even edible. Lessen the stress and order seafood without shells or bones.

  • 3. Corn on the cob

We all have the fear that we’re going to have something stuck in our teeth on a date and the other person won’t tell you. Well if you order corn on the cob, this fear is a reality. No question about it. Corn on the cob has an extremely annoying habit of getting stuck in your teeth so just avoid it. And remember, it’s bad manners to pick your teeth in front of your date.

  • 4. Spaghetti

We’ve all seen the iconic spaghetti scene in ‘Lady and the Tramp,’ which is the epitome of romance. However, we need to remember that it is not real life. Spaghetti in the real world is a recipe for disaster. Slurping and chewing while trying to get to know each other really doesn’t paint a picture of seduction. Cutting spaghetti into small pieces is a no-no and attempting to eat it one string at a time will literally take forever. If you feel like ordering the pasta, choose the penne instead. Avoid spaghetti at all costs.

  • 5. Lamb chops

Lamb chops are difficult to cut and the bone is likely to get in the way. And you definitely shouldn’t pick it up and eat it with your hands. Just avoid it altogether.

  • 6. French onion soup

For starters, anything with onion in it is an obvious no go. Onion breath can kill a date. The second problem is the amount of cheese in French onion soup. It leaves long strings dangling from your mouth to your spoon to your plate and, overall, is just not an enticing look.

  • 7. Gigantic sandwiches and subs

In fact, anything packed and stacked that needs to be eaten with your hands is visibly a recipe for mess. This includes burgers, tacos, burritos, and triple-decker sub sandwiches. Yes they’re delicious, but they’re sadly not first date appropriate. If you do however find yourself on a date in a place that exclusively sells giant sandwiches, Whitmore suggests using a knife and fork. Although it may seem like an odd thing to do, your date will thank you in the long run.

  • 8. Ribs

Ribs are an obvious first-date danger zone. Not only do you need to eat them with your hands (not overly elegant), but they’re usually absolutely smothered in some sort of sticky sauce, which will inevitably end up all over your face and hands and even your outfit. Not sexy. However, Whitmore does mention an exception - if your date orders ribs or something of that nature, then you can both be messy together, if you choose.

  • 9. Chicken wings

This has the same logic as ribs. Chicken wings are unbelievably messy and almost impossible to style out with a knife and fork. Save these tasty treats for a future date when you’ve both become a bit more comfortable around each other.

  • 10. Good manners

Last but by no means least, remember that bad table manners are a deal breaker on a first date. It may sound straight forward but Whitmore emphasizes the significance of not chewing with your mouth open, not speaking with your mouth full, and not drinking too much. She also reminds people to be polite to the wait staff because this is one of the most off-putting traits on a date. Basic manners, and a little common sense, will go a long way in impressing your potential new partner.
