Our best date ideas: Glasgow

Many think of Glasgow as Scotland’s ‘City of Love’, after all it’s where St Valentine was laid to rest! So, if you’re stuck for date ideas, Glasgow is a city with plenty of possibilities. EliteSingles has put together a list of the places we think you’ll have the best time on a date in Glasgow.

Dinner date

Glasgow may not have had the best reputation for its culinary delights in the past, but in recent years the restaurant scene in Glasgow has been booming. For an evening of traditional Scottish fare, Cafe Gandolfi in the Merchant City is a warm and inviting restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere making it a comfortable place to get to know each other.

Glasgow is also a haven for fans of Indian cuisine; but for somewhere that is a cut above your run-of-mill British curry house, Dakhin located in Candleriggs, is an upscale restaurant serving authentic South Indian dishes. For somewhere that may be out of your comfort zone, but definitely worth a visit, order sushi to share in stylish Japanese restaurant Nanakusa.

Drinks for two

Glasgow is full of date ideas to meet for a drink, but for somewhere off the beaten track, suggest wetting your whistles in Chinaski’s. With no sign outside you could easily miss this hidden gem. Once inside the classy candlelight bar, amongst their list of exquisite cocktails, you’ll also find 80-plus varieties of whiskey on sale.

If you’d rather meet for a laid-back pint, head to The Vintage at Drygate, which has an onsite brewery and extensive selection of keg, cask and bottled beers.

Coffee date

In an EliteSingles survey, 55% of our members revealed that meeting for coffee would be their idea of a perfect first date.1 One of the leaders in Glasgow’s thriving continental coffee scene is Papercup located on Great Western Road. Stylish yet understated, suggest meeting here if you too believe that a low-key daytime date is the best way to get to know someone.

Date outdoors

If the weather is fine, you could ask your date out for a stroll around your favourite parts of the city. If you’d both like to explore and perhaps learn something new, The Glasgow School of Art hosts walking tours showing how artists, designers and architects have contributed to the city’s cultural regeneration. Alternatively, if you’d like to see the city’s offering of flora and fauna, the Glasgow Botanic Gardens are the perfect place for a romantic stroll.

For date idea that is out of the ordinary, you could meet for a peaceful walk around the Glasgow Necropolis whilst admiring stunning views of the city below.

Cultural date

In Glasgow, whether you are a fan of contemporary art or more traditional painting and sculpture, there’s something for everyone. Suggest visiting Tramway, the home of last year’s Turner Prize and get the conversation started by asking your date their thoughts about what’s on display.

Otherwise, you could peruse the varied collection at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, with pieces from ancient Scotland and ancient Egypt alike, there are so many artefacts to wonder at together and entrance is free!
